RE: CDFI Research Working Group Call on 10/2 at 2PM EST -

From : Communities>>Open Forum
Hey Jeffrey! We do plan on recording (for note taking purposes only) but unsure yet if the call will be released. We want to promote open discussion and while I know having calls publicly released can sometimes stifle that.  It will depend on the discussions and how sensitive they get - I don't expect anything extremely unusual in that area, but if people had particular pain points regarding research that they may not want publicly released then I do want to have those discussions. So I guess - stay [More]

@Sarah Greenberg  It was so very thoughtful and kind for you to reach out.  I echo  @Vicky Stein 's comments on the CWN community thread - for me this is just further evidence that:   Most people are kind and thoughtful; That often it just takes an "ask" to receive; Many who are blessed are willing to share those blessings with others! I love this community and am so thankful that my path allowed me to connect with yours.  Thanks for making a great day even better with such an uplifting tidbit! [More]

Thank you all for pulling this forum together! I hope to be on the call today.  Some of the research questions we've had here at Meda, but haven't been able to answer, are What are the frameworks for tracking progress of minority entrepreneurs? We know how to track certain things, like revenue growth, employment, retained earnings, etc., but what about other aspects of entrepreneurship? How do we track progress toward management expertise? How do we track that they are gaining knowledge that they [More]

Hello Caprice,  We are a small Native CDFI in SW Washington State. Since we started distributing small business loans, we decided to go with DownHome as well.  The TA service is excellent, very responsive and like you stated they have their prices available to you. DownHome is very user friendly and is cloud based as well.  I highly recommend DH;  Good luck with your NCDFI program and hope to see you with all the other NCDFI's in DC for OFN.  Diana Pickernell Loan Officer Chehalis Tribal Loan Fund [More]

Hello @Lissette Paukert ! Sorry for the delayed response....Ultimately we chose DownHome for servicing and stuck with LaserPro from documentation (primarily for the up-to-date legal language).  As you would expect, there are pros/cons to each option.  Sadly, I did not fully complete my spreadsheet due to time constraints and, for us, DownHome quickly became the front-runner.  They do integrate well with a variety of software platforms (not LaserPro), but entering the loan information (even from [More]

Key Person Insurance

Mon, 2019-09-30 12:55
From : Communities>>Open Forum
Increasingly, we find ourselves making loans to one-person non-profits or non-profits whose strength is their charismatic leadership of their founder (even as they have grown to a few employees). I keep wondering if we should be requiring key person insurance for these loans. Does anyone require this insurance?  Any insights or thoughts on processes for this would be greatly appreciated. ------------------------------ Eileen Neely Director of Lending Housing Assistance Council Washington DC 202-869-23-93 [More]

Consumer vs Commercial Lending

Thu, 2019-09-26 09:23
From : Communities>>Open Forum
Hi all, My organization is a CDFI making commercial loans.  We've recently launched a solar panel loan product that is getting great uptake, but have had questions about our ability / capacity to finance them for borrowers who may bridge commercial / consumer purpose.  Specifically, we've had some farmers and home-based business people ask about our financing, and we have some trepidation about what we may be getting into if we blur the distinction.   I suppose it's fair to say that we're concerned [More]

Take Ownership of Your Lending System

From : Communities>>Open Forum
Hi Everyone, Just wanted to share my blog: Take Ownership of Your Lending System .  As you know your lending system plays a critical role in your constituents' experience. Ownership of that system begins long before go-live – it starts with selecting the right platform and implementing it with an eye towards the future. And, the system's long-term success relies heavily on how it is maintained. This post details an ownership model comprised of three pillars: support, operations and growth. Would [More]

This is a great opportunity to explore the importance of CDFIs - I'm hoping you will get lots of submissions! We'll be submitting a paper that explores the literature on why program evaluation of CDFIs is particularly challenging (as well as what we can tell, from the current scholarship, about CDFI outcomes).  Which, by the way, if anyone in the CDFI research or impact evaluation community is reading this - if you've done research that looks at program evaluation in this space please email me or [More]

Hello CDFI community - A few months ago OFN , CNote , and Carolina Small Business asked for feedback from forum users to gauge interest in a research collaborative. We received 48 responses which indicated an interest in this type of project. It looks like there is a wide array of interest - from both CDFIs themselves and partner organizations. More than half of respondents showed an interest in all of the research areas we asked about (peer-reviewed research, impact assessment, market studies, and [More]
