RE: Gauging Interest for Research Collaborative

Thanks Ruth! We're hoping to get both CDFIs directly and partners like FUND involved. Research is after all a team sport! After we gauge interest hoping to have a conversation on what sort of common challenges/themes might be out there that organizations could collaborate on.  For example, I had previously read your reports on women in the CDFI industry. With original data collection like that being so expensive, would be great for this group to explore topics like how that data could be leveraged [More]

Hello everyone! OFN, in partnership with  Carolina Small Business Development Fund  and CNote , have put together a (very short!) survey to see if there would be interest in starting a research collaborative. If you or someone from your organization has any interest in research, even if research/policy analysis isn't a formal part of your job function,   we encourage you to take the survey at this link .  What's the goal? In short, have you ever noticed at conferences all the networking by job function [More]

RE: Can CDFIs accept grants from Marijuana growers or retailers?

From : Communities>>Open Forum
HI Linda, re the question of accepting a grant from a cannabis company, the answer we received was no. While most of these companies don't have a formal banking relationship (although I believe that is starting to change), we were advised that if through an auditing/compliance process, it was discovered that a grant check was deposited by a non-profit from a cannabis company that the feds may determine that the non-profit accepted an "illegal" contribution. In short, we were advised by the SBA [More]

Hi everyone,  I'm looking for examples of state- or local-government funded and CDFI-managed impact investment or community development funds.  Please share names or locations or links. Or perhaps there are existing publications that list out these programs. I'll be happy to compile and share back to the community. Thank you to those who have responded.  I received private responses as well and it seem there is definitely confusion.  Some responded it is ok to accept grants from Marijuana companies and others say no. Agnes,  I'm not sure you answered Linda's question. She wanted to know if her fund could ACCEPT grant money from a marijuana-based firm, not provide them with capital. Did your team come across that issue in their research? Hi Linda, We researched this issue a few years ago and received feedback from the SBA.  The response was that it doesn't matter if it's legal in a certain state, it's still illegal from a federal perspective.  Given that CDFI funds are federal, my sense is the answer would be the same. ------------------------------ Agnes Noonan Authorized Representative Women's Economic Self-Sufficiency Team Albuquerque NM (505) 246-6929 ------------------------------

Can someone tell me if CDFI's are allowed to accept grants from marijuana grower or retail companies? We are in CA where marijuana is legal. Some cities are requiring growers and retailers to return a percentage of their profits to community nonprofits. I have asked the CDFI Fund for guidance but they are not responding. RE: Challenges in Collecting loan covenants from small business clients

Tue, 2019-05-14 11:11
From : Communities>>Open Forum
This is a very interesting topic. Our CDFI has boiler plate loan documents containing financial covenants as well as increasing the interest rate when an event of default is identified. However, as a director of lending and lead lender I find my hands tied relative to enforcing such events of default for failure to submit financial data, especially when payments are being made timely and the only default is failure to submit financial data. However, as part of our technical assistance program, collecting [More]
