Micro Lending for Entrepreneurs Social Entrepreneurs and Non Profits

We are a new entrant into the Community Finance world and discovered it quite by accident. "With the best intentions" we relocated our suburban business into Paterson NJ. "With the best intentions" we regularly participate dint eh worst of toxic charity. When we finally listened to one of the gracious elders of th community who by tranining experience nor education appeared to have anything to offer us patiently explianed how we were stealing the dignity ofhte people we were trying to help and creating dependence instead of independence we came behind her (invisibly) in create a very successfully micro finnance effort instead of giving toxic charity. By successful we guarg based ont eh fact that not a single loan payment has been missed and to the best of our knowledge the greater community believes the money behind the program is coming from the community elder. Not only is she recieving the credit and respect she deserves but the community is looking at itself saying "Heh we got this". The benefits of the paradigm shift have bourne unexpected fruit in both the traditional suburban "giving" community and the urban receiving community when this wisdom turned our arrogance on our heads and opened both of our eyes to the possibilities that are created when we respect and honor each other's truth and unique experience. Urban solutions will not be birthed in suburban boardrooms. If we want lasting solutions suburban ivy league folks of all colors will have to engage in meaningful respectful often messy relationships with the people in the communities they hope to impact coming from the standpoint of being "humble leanrers. Our budget is very small but the success we have had "as a humble learning community" has opened our eyes to being intentional in formalizing and growing our informal micro lending experiment into a larger scale enterprise based on the same principals including folks from both communities. Not from a "programming standpoint" but on a larger scale based on one on one long term mentoring and coaching relationships and the devleopment of intentinal communities to support the innovations bubbling up from the community itself.
