In additional to traditional financial services, Nusenda Credit Union is committed to seeking out new and innovative programs and services that meet the needs of our member owners, community members, and community partners. Examples of this philosophy include Co-Op Capital and our Financial Capability Curriculum. Co-Op Capital is an innovative financial product offered through Nusenda that changes how low-income entrepreneurs secure capital by establishing new access points and changing the roles of lender and borrower. Nusenda works with trusted member organizations, such as associations or co-ops, to offer microloans to low-income entrepreneurs or those who have difficulty accessing traditional or alternative lending. The program has been highly successful in its launch phase and is positioned to expand. Nusenda Credit Union has taken an innovative and collaborative approach to providing financial capability, training, and workshops for community and non-profit organizations. Nusenda’s financial capability philosophy is to integrate and embed financial capability into existing programming to make it more robust, rather than adding new and more programs. Integrating financial capability into existing systems increases the potential for sustainability, deeper impact, and lasting partnerships.

Since its beginning in 1936, Nusenda Credit Union has operated under a fundamental principle: do well, so that we can do good. This principle has fueled the credit union’s growth from its nine founding members to more than 160,000 member-owners. Nusenda Credit Union believes that giving means more than just writing a check. Our financial and non-monetary contributions are shared with our partner organizations and nonprofits to strengthen and support the needs of the communities where our members live and work. Our unique approach to philanthropy incorporates the “Power of WE” as our members help guide our investments toward five focus areas: Education, Healthcare, the Arts, Environment and Wildlife, Community Services and Support. Nusenda Credit Union has been recognized locally and nationally for the innovative nature of the programs we have created. This commitment to community is focused on improving financial outcomes for our member-owners, our employer group partners, and the larger community.

    Why We’re Here

Nearly 50 million people in this country are working hard every day to make ends meet. They’re doing everything right to provide for their children. Many of them hold two or three jobs. They pay their taxes. And yet they’re barely making ends meet – let alone making a better life for themselves and their kids. For more than one-third of all households and more than half of households of color, financial ruin is one crisis away. Nearly half of consumers can’t get an affordable loan to advance their aspirations or cover an emergency. One in five pay more than they should for basic financial services. And if average Black family wealth continues to grow at the same pace it has over the past three decades, it would take Black families 228 years, and Latino families 84 years, to amass the same amount of wealth White families have today. When most of the people in our country are just getting by, rather than getting ahead, something is broken. Prosperity Now is working to make it right.

    How We Work

    • We work with service providers to develop, test and scale proven approaches to building wealth.
    • We engage lawmakers at all levels of government to ensure they have the knowledge and will needed to advance policies that enable meaningful mobility.
    • We conduct cutting-edge research on strategies that provide financial empowerment for low- and moderate-income families.
    • We equip advocates with the data and tools they need to fight for a more prosperous economy.
    • We connect a community of constituents eager to open doors to opportunity.
    • We collaborate with like-minded nonprofits and think-tanks across the country to ensure everyone can prosper.
