On November 12, Cliff Rosenthal, former CEO of National Federation of Community Development Credit Unions (now: Inclusiv), cofounder of the CDFI Coalition, recipient of the 2008 lifetime achievement Gramlich Award for Responsible Finance, and trained historian, announced the publication of his new book, Democratizing Finance: Origins of the Community Development Financial Institutions Movement. The book traces the origin of community development finance and "weaves together the streams that made CDFI possible."
Rosenthal conducted more than 200 interviews with CDFI leaders and practitioners, former Clinton officials, funders, and investors over the last three years as well as digging through historical records that date back to Benjamin Franklin. This is the story of the CDFI industry, but it is not just a look back. The book concludes with a twenty-year assessment of the CDFI Fund and reflections on the nature and challenges of the CDFI field.
Democratizing Finance: Origins of the Community Development Financial Institutions Movement is available through Amazon, Barnes & Noble, FriesenPress, and other on-line booksellers worldwide (Paperback, ISBN 978-1-5255-3663-2. Hardbound and ebook also available.)
Look for an upcoming author interview with Rosenthal that will be posted on the OFN blog in the coming weeks.
