Summary

The Director of Development is a central member of Community Vision’s Development Team and will be engaged in all aspects of fundraising and fund development. Reporting to the Vice President of External Relations, this position serves as one of the primary strategists in developing and implementing our national and regional fundraising plans (including individuals, foundations, corporate and public sources), securing investment into the loan fund and designing support structures for local donor engagement.

The Director of Development leads the design and implement a comprehensive multi-year fundraising and capitalization strategy to advance the mission of Community Vision. The Director will work closely with the President, Vice President of External Relations, and the executive leadership team to set fundraising and loan fund capitalization goals, implement annual fundraising and capitalization strategies, and participate in the overall work of the External Relations / Development team, including managing 3 staff members. The Director will have their own fundraising targets and will increase and diversify philanthropic revenue. Current annual fundraising for the organization is $3M-$5M in general and programmatic support as well as an annual investment goal of $20M. The Director will join a team of experienced, committed, and mission-driven Development professionals. Occasional domestic travel is required.

Responsibilities

Fund Development

  • Collaborate with the Vice President of External Relations and the development team to develop and implement annual and multi-year fundraising plans.
  • Develop, implement, and support strategies that will attract short, intermediate, and long-term growth in individual, institutional government and corporate support.
  • Cultivates, solicits, and stewards a portfolio of qualified prospects in the $25,000 – $1M giving and support range.
  • Cultivates, solicits, and stewards a portfolio of qualified loan fund investments in the $1M – $10M range.
  • Direct research initiatives to identify and cultivate new donors/investors, including individuals, foundations, government, corporations, family offices and fund managers.
  • Coordination with the Vice President, President and Executive Team to cultivate, and solicit institutional and corporate support at national, regional, and local levels.
  • Present research results and funding/investment strategies to the Vice President and Executive Team.
  • Ensure development and submission of high-quality grant applications as well as qualitative and quantitative funder/investor reports.
  • Ensure the organization’s maintains high quality investor relations approach.
  • Manage fundraising events, including oversight of the sponsorship solicitation, sales and logistical planning for Annual Event.

People Management

  • Provide regular supervision, coaching, and delegation of tasks to a team of three development professionals, including: communicate job expectations, delegation of work responsibilities, training in those responsibilities, and monitoring the team member’s successful completion of their responsibilities.
  • Provide coaching/feedback to development team members and lead/deliver their annual performance evaluations, including identifying training and development opportunities and assisting in the setting of the team members’ goals and objectives.
  • Provide feedback to the Vice President of External Relations regularly on team members’ performance and contribute feedback to the annual salary/merit discussions.
  • Foster an inclusive organizational culture that respects colleagues’ diverse perspectives, experiences, and expertise.
  • Engage in training and professional development to improve management practices.

Administration

  • Work with VP of External Relations in the development of the annual regional income and expense budgets for development projects and activities. Analyze and report on variances between actual and budgeted income and expense amounts.
  • Provide input into donor marketing and communications programs to ensure key goals and objectives are met, increasing awareness, elevating our brand and donor stewardship. Oversee development correspondence to ensure consistency and accuracy.
  • Work closely with the development staff and report on all regional/corporate site development projects, newsletters, funding, and related items. Provide reports monthly or as directed by the Vice President on fundraising activities, major gifts, grants and special events, public relations, and other funding efforts.
  • Ensure accurate records of all contacts are maintained in the Salesforce CRM system. Establish and maintain correspondence records. Maintain statistical and research data for all funding sources.
  • Track and report on national, state and regional trends in funding and investment related to fundraising and CDFI industry and community real estate.
  • Coordinate staff providing administrative and technical support for Annual Event.

 

Requirements

Ideal qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent years of experience in related fields required.
  • 5+ years relevant experience working in fund development, ideally in a nonprofit
  • 3+ years of experience supervising and managing a team of professionals
  • Track record of securing multi-year support in excess of $500,000 commitments
  • Experience/interest in CDFIs, impact investing, and community/economic development
  • Strong written and communication skills
  • Excellent project management skills
  • Ability to represent the organization at public events
  • Strong interpersonal relationship-building and network development skills
  • Experience coordinating or supporting events
  • Comfortable working in a Salesforce
  • Ability to work in a team environment, contributing ideas and supporting colleagues
  • Additional training in development and non-profit management preferred
  • Expert attention to detail and accuracy
  • Excellent organizational skills

More About the Position

The Director of Development is a full-time, exempt position. This position reports to the VP, External Relations. The salary for this position is between $152,000 – $169,275 annually, depending on experience. The position will be based at either of Community Vision’s offices in San Francisco or Oakland, with flexibility for hybrid work. While regular weekly travel to local/regional Bay Area events, meetings, and activities is to be expected as part of this role, occasional evening and out-of- area travel may also be necessary.

The position involves regular computer and telephone use plus some minimal lifting.
