The mission of the Upper Manhattan Empowerment Zone Development Corporation (UMEZ) is to sustain the economic revitalization of all communities in Upper Manhattan through job creation, corporate alliances, strategic investments and small business investments. UMEZ has facilitated economic development in the neighborhoods of Central, East and West Harlem, Washington Heights; and Inwood. As we enter our fourth decade, we are looking to expand our financing to eligible borrowers across New York City while continuing to deliver on our commitment to Upper Manhattan.
UMEZ is an independent not-for-profit corporation created in 1995 and has invested more than $250 million in the Upper Manhattan community, leveraging over $1.5 billion in private capital, and has funded 100 small businesses.

Summary
Job Title: Senior Commercial Lending Officer
Reports to: Senior Vice President & Chief Lending Officer
Summary:
UMEZ is implementing a strategic growth plan to expand its lending activities, and we are looking for individuals to join our team and help us realize this growth plan. The Senior Commercial Lending Officer will play a key role in this work. Working with the Senior Vice President, Lending they will lead efforts to explore and identify market opportunities, develop partnerships and build networks that will drive impactful and sustainable growth in line with UMEZ’s mission and goals.
The Senior Commercial Lending Officer will be involved in all aspects of the lending process and be responsible for building a portfolio of viable and impactful projects. Working closely with the Business Investments Team, the Senior Commercial Lending Officer will be responsible for conducting research and outreach to identify and develop new lending opportunities, cultivating new and managing existing relationships, and actively promoting UMEZ’s products and services. This position requires a commitment to UMEZ’s mission of community development through financial services.
Responsibilities
Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Include the following and other duties may be assigned:
- Analyze potential markets and develop partnerships and referral networks to benefit our growth plans
- Identify communities, organizations, and projects that would benefit from UMEZ’s financing products.
- Manage the full loan lifecycle, due diligence, underwriting, credit approval process and recommend appropriate loan term, repayment schedules by conducting risk management assessments to evaluate creditworthiness
- Gather client application information and visit clients’ and loan applicants’ business location to verify information, check on progress and offer technical assistance, referrals, and follow up when necessary
- Provide one-on-one counseling, referral opportunities, and actively provide customer support to assist their efforts to secure funding
- Assist entrepreneurs and strategizing with them to overcome business development issues; advises clients on the loan application process and basic criteria used to determine credit worthiness.
- Work with the Business Investment Team and to evaluate transactions.
- Prepare financial written analyses and recommendations and present written overviews and oral presentations as required.
- Assist the Business Investment team and legal counsel with loan closings.
- Attend non-work hours events or meetings as it relates to engaging and representing UMEZ’s mission to cultivate community partnerships and promote lending activities.

Compensation and Benefits
Salary Range | $105,000 – $118,000 |
Benefits | The benefit package includes medical, dental and vision insurance as well as a 401K plan. |
